Waitlist Launch Readiness Checklist
A pre-launch checklist that takes a referral waitlist from a blank page to a live loop, covering the offer, the form, the confirmation ask, reward terms, fraud controls, email compliance, and the plan for launch day.
Reviewed for 2026, updated September 8, 2026.
Most waitlists fail before the first visitor arrives. The offer is vague, the form asks for too much, the confirmation page says thank you and nothing else, and the referral link is buried in an email nobody opens. By the time the maker notices that signups are not sharing, the launch window is half gone. This checklist front-loads the decisions that decide whether a list grows on its own: who it is for, what people get for joining, how the first referral ask is made, which rewards are promised and on what terms, and which checks keep fake signups from reaching the top of the board.
Work through it once before the page goes live and keep the completed copy next to your launch plan. The items follow the order of the guide at /guide/ and go deeper in the articles at /blog/why-plain-waitlist-underperforms/, /blog/signups-into-referrers/, and /blog/avoiding-fake-referrals/. Before you commit to reward tiers, run them through the Referral Reward Budget Calculator at /tools/referral-reward-budget/, and use the Launch Waitlist Size Calculator at /tools/launch-waitlist-size/ to sanity check the list size your launch actually needs. Adjust the thresholds to your product; the sequence is what matters.
- Write one sentence describing exactly who you want on this list and where those people currently spend time online.
- Decide whether a waitlist is the right tool at all: if you could ship a usable version within a few weeks, or you have no seed channel, reconsider before building the page.
- Name at least one seed traffic source you control (a community you are active in, a partner, your own audience) and write down when you will post there.
- Write a headline that says what the product does for a specific person, and a subhead that says what happens the moment they sign up.
- Reduce the first-screen form to an email address, with first name as the only optional field; move any qualifying question to the confirmation step or a follow-up email.
- Enter your target list size into the Launch Waitlist Size Calculator and confirm the number you are aiming for matches what your launch goals need.
- Design the confirmation page so it makes the first referral ask immediately, shows the unique link with a one-tap copy, and states the concrete benefit of sharing.
- Write the welcome email so it repeats the referral link in plain text and shows the subscriber their current position in line.
- Choose reward tiers that cost little at scale and appeal to the specific person you want on the list, such as earlier access, founding pricing, or extra capacity, rather than cash or generic gift cards.
- Run every tier through the Referral Reward Budget Calculator and confirm the total cost stays within what the launch can afford if redemptions come in at the high end.
- Set a ladder of reachable milestones (a small unlock at one referral, more at a few, the best tier at a high count) instead of a single prize for the top spot.
- Publish the referral terms before launch: what counts as a referral, when rewards are delivered, and what happens to accounts flagged for abuse.
- Require email confirmation before any referral credit counts, and block disposable email domains and plus-addressing tricks at signup.
- Hold new referral credit in a pending state for a short review window, and flag clusters that share an IP address, device fingerprint, or signup burst.
- Add a human review step for any subscriber approaching a high-value tier, since that is where the incentive to cheat is strongest.
- Decide whether the leaderboard shows a rolling or weekly board alongside the all-time board, so a newcomer can still win something this week.
- Show each subscriber their own position and the next milestone in every message, not only the global top ten.
- Decide whether to display a public signup count on the landing page, and if the number is still small, keep it hidden until it helps rather than hurts.
- Set up tracking for the numbers you will actually watch each week: confirmed signups by source, share rate, invites per referrer, and invite conversion, and enter them into the Waitlist Viral Coefficient Calculator.
- Confirm the signup flow meets email consent and unsubscribe requirements for the regions you send to, and that every message carries a working unsubscribe link and your mailing address.
- Write the first four nurture emails before launch and put them on a calendar, each restating the referral link and the subscriber position.
- Plan the handoff now: decide whether access opens to everyone at once or in cohorts by position, and write the launch email so top referrers are in the first wave.
- Schedule the reward delivery for each tier on a specific date and assign someone to do it, so no promise made during the waitlist goes unkept on launch day.
- Test the whole flow as a stranger would: sign up, confirm, copy the link, sign up a second address through it, and check that the credit appears only after confirmation.
